Question
How is quotCHANGE of HEARTquot different from quotCHANGE of MINDquot?
if its possible to change ones mind, is it possible to change ones heart?
Answer
A change of heart goes deeper than a change of mind. It is a more radical change in the person. It is possible to change either, but harder to reverse a change of heart. Ones heart can be hardened in an instant, but his is usually following a course already laid out by many little steps along the way and choices the person has made. When Pharaohs heart was hardened in the Bible it led to him changing his mind, but it was all his previous vacillations that led to the hardening of his heart which God knew from the beginnning. Later in Isaiah it speaks of God trading a heart of flesh for a heart of stone. These passages imply that something more than human agency is involved in the radical change we speak of as a change of heart. The thoughts of the mind are far more fluid and disconnected than the emotions of the heart. Emotions are the things which move us from within, thoughts are the information sensory and otherwise which inform our actions or analyze their results. We own our emotions more than we do our thoughts. The heart is directional even when the mind is indifferent.
